Using
unconventional techniques (toy accordian, lorenzo organ, auto
harp, tablas) alongside the more conventional ones (guitars,
bass, drums, harmonica, mandolin) the Ambrose Tompkins sound
is not easily defined. Drawing inspiration from a vast spectrum
of music, the band have been steadily drawing attention to themselves
thanks to a string of warmly-received limited releases, while
their off-kilter live perormances have earned the 5-piece recent
tour dates with The Go! Team and The Brian Jonestown Massacre
among others.
Huw Stephens and Everett True are among their growing band of
admirers while the Rough Trade staff had some nice words to
say in the sleevenotes to their end-of-year Counter Culture
compilation (referring to the track 'Running On Grass'):
"Like many of the best records, this beauty seemingly came out
of nowhere (well the postman's sack anyway), and instantly became
the stand-out track on the superb "Extended Play" EP. This really
is a beautiful, all too brief gem."
The band's debut album 'Are You Well' is out now - full details
on this and all Ambrose Tompkins's releases to date can be found
